Dental Crowns Purpose, Procedure, Complications | Smile Design Center

Crowns are another way of restoring your beautiful smile at Smile Design Center. Crowns are synthetic caps made of porcelain or other material, that are placed on top of a tooth. They restore a tooth’s function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth’s function.

Dr. Sapozhnik also uses crowns to attach bridges, cover implants, prevent a cracked tooth from becoming worse, or when an existing filling is in danger of becoming loose or dislocated. Crowns also serve an aesthetic purpose, and are applied when discolored or stained teeth need to be restored to their natural appearance.

Dr. Sapozhnik can transform your smile in one visit by putting high quality ceramic dental crowns using CEREC technology. You are eligible for this service is you have:

  • Cracked or chipped teeth.
  • Decayed teeth.
  • Gaps between teeth.
  • Crooked teeth.
  • Metal fillings.

Procedure

A tooth is usually reduced in size to accommodate a crown. An impression is taken and a cast is made of the existing teeth. The impression is sent to a special lab, which manufactures a custom-designed crown. In some cases, a temporary crown is applied until the permanent crown is ready. Permanent crowns are cemented in place.

Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. Other materials that are generally used include gold and metal alloys, and acrylic. The metals are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth. Porcelain fused to metal is a favorite material because it is both strong and attractive in its appearance.
